THE HELMS BAKERY MAN WOULD COME THROUGH OUR NEIGHBOR HOOD IN COSTA MESA CA, MY MOM WAS A SINGLE PARENT, AND NOT MUCH MONEY. HE WOULD PULL OUT HIS DRAWER OF COOKIES, AND GIVE US A BAG OF COOKIE CRUMBS. WE LOVED THEM, AND THE SMELL, I WILL NEVER FORGET THE SMELL OR THE SOUND OF THE WHISTLE COMING DOWN THE STREET. THANK YOU HELMS BAKERY MAN WHERE EVER YOU ARE....

I remember the good humor man with fond memories...and my dad worked for Helms and use to come by every morning and bring fresh glazed donuts to our house. I wish I could find the tune to the Good Humor truck...I have it in my head

Our Good Humor man, Michael Clemo! Summer days, parked under the shade trees, shoving sticks into Milky Way Candy Bars, so he could freeze 'em. Does anybody remember the strawberry-coconut ice cream bars? Or the chocolate mint?

Steve's post reminds me of another annual event in the neighborhood. Remember the guy that would come around every year with the pony and the cowboy outfits and would dress the kids up and sit them on the pony to take photos that of course everyone's mother would buy ... because they were so "cute"? I bet there are still some of those photos floating around so it you have one of those cowboy/cowgirl photos send them to me at gerry@ollalumni.com and I will share them with all your OLL Alumni. I know my 2 sisters have or had photos like this (I refused to get dressed up and sit on a pony so I am sorry ... none of me out there ... ha ha). anyway, we will unearth one of these photos ... maybe Steve has one or two hiding somewhere ... ha ha??? Take care all and share your memories of OLL and the neighborhood here on this blog page and visit your OLL ALumni website regularly as well at www.ollalumni.com I have just put up the OLL Jukebox for your listening enjoyment!

Great memories of the Good Humor Man and the Helms truck – I agree with everyone the cream puffs were the best. I also remember a man with a cart who sold fresh produce and kids would have their pictures taken on the donkey that pulled the cart. Another cart that came through the neighborhood was a man who would sharpen knives my grandparents lived at 1074 West Edgeware Road a couple of blocks from Carroll St. Our street football games were always stopped once we heard the bell from the Good Humor truck.

Yep, remember all of those shows very well ... However one exception Norma ... "Chuck Barris and The Gong Show" ... not embarasssing ?? some of those amateur performances were embarrassment hall of fame material ... ha ha! By the way, "The Gong Show" gave birth to the original "Unknown Comic" who in reality was a Canadian comedian named "Murray Langston" ... remember the "Unknown Comic" ... the comedian with the brown paper bag over his head ??? I am working on a unique slide show for the website that will highlight a lot of these old classics ... keep watching the "OLL Alumni Website" at www.ollalumni.com for the next addition and improvement, and keep sharing your memories on this "OLL Nostalgia Blog Site"! Take care everyone! Gerry

Do you remember those popular TV shows:? Lost in Space, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, The Munsters, The Addams Family, The Gong Show, The Mod Squad, and The Ozzie and Harrriet Show. These were shows that the whole family could watch, and no one would ever get embarrassed. Those really were the good ole' days!

Thanks for the responses on the HELMS MAN from Amelia Jimenez, Janet Wray, Maria Urdaneta and Nick Rasic .... YES ... I do remember the Helms Man and especially their "cream puffs" ... it was a special day when we could afford a delicious cream puff! Yep, I also remember the raspberry filled donuts. I was just discussing this with another alumni earlier today... great memories! I will do a piece on the Helms Man and I also remember the Carnation Milk trucks and Janet Wray mentioned the Adohr Farms delivery trucks as well as the wire framed basket withthe glass bottles of milk delivered to your front door in the early morning hours! ? WOW, Pamela Speakman even knew her "Good Humor Man's" name ... impressive! Let's hear your fond memories of Loretto and the neighborhood and we will share them with the hundreds that view this site and the OLL Alumni Website. Take care and greetings from Scotland to all OLL Alumni - especially my class of 1968 that now have the most registered alumni on the webstire with 17 registered ... and more to come! So, spread the word and ENJOY the website at www.ollalumni.com as well at this OLL Nostalgia Blog page! Take Care - Gerry Gallagher - Class of 1968

I remember the good humor man but the "Helms" was my buddy with all those donuts. He would pull out those huge draws filled with any kind of donut, bread, cookie you could think of ...my favorite was the cream puff. I have never tasted a cream puff as delicious as the one the "Helmsman" would sell from his truck.

Oh my , yes! His name was Michael Clemo and he would park and take his lunch in front of my grandmother's front yard trees. He would give us a box of Milky Ways or 3 Muskateers bars and an empty box and popsicle sticks. Us kids would insert the sticks and stack the bars in the empty box so he could then freeze them and sell them. For our work he would give us each a free ice cream!

He stayed in touch with my mother for years and even came to my wedding! What a wonderful memory. Alas, we have not heard from him at Christmas in 2 years and our letters go unanswered. But he gave us wonderful memories.

My husband is from a small town in Michigan and still believes that growing up in "the big city" I must have missed out on hometown memories. Is he ever wrong.
